The chimney is the single most common place a roof leaks. It interrupts the slope of the roof, and water has to be actively diverted around it by flashing, counter-flashing and a sound crown. When any of those fail, water runs straight down the chimney into your home.

We repair chimney flashing, rebuild and seal crowns, and address the masonry and brickwork that lets water in, on homes across New Jersey. Because we are roofers, we fix the leak where it actually starts instead of just caulking the inside.

Chimney flashing repair and chimney crown repair fix two different leaks. A flashing leak shows up during wind-driven rain, as a stain on the ceiling or wall right beside the chimney. A cracked crown lets water soak down through the masonry, so the stain can appear lower down, even a floor below, and the brick often shows white efflorescence. We work out which one it is before we price anything, and often it is both.

The smaller parts matter too. A chimney cap keeps rain, snow and animals out of the flue, and replacing a missing or rusted one is a common chimney leak repair on older homes. Where mortar joints have washed out, chimney repointing replaces the failed mortar so water stops wicking into the brick. On a wide chimney we build a cricket behind it, so water and snow shed around the chimney instead of piling up against it.
