Your roofing contractor in Bergen County, NJ

We are a roofing contractor in Bergen County, NJ, with our shop in Englewood, a few minutes from Route 4 and the George Washington Bridge. Bergen is New Jersey's most populous county, spread across 70 towns, and its roofs range from century-old slate to last decade's architectural shingles. Most of our work here is roof repair, roof leak repair and roof replacement, with a fixed written price before any job starts.

There is no shortage of Bergen County roofers. What we offer is simple: most of the county is within about half an hour of our shop, so a leak call does not wait on a long drive; we answer the phone and show up when we said we would; and every job carries a 10-year workmanship guarantee from a roofing company based in Bergen County and close enough to come back. For retail and mixed-use buildings, see commercial roofing in Fort Lee and Paramus.

Bergen County homes and the roofs on them

Bergen's housing runs in bands. The older towns near the Hudson and through the Northern Valley, like Englewood, Teaneck, Tenafly and Ridgewood, are full of colonials, Tudors and Victorians from the 1900s to the 1940s. Many still carry slate or clay tile on at least part of the house, with masonry chimneys and flashing that is now decades old. Radburn in Fair Lawn, planned in 1929, and the post-war boom that followed filled towns like Paramus, Bergenfield and Fair Lawn with capes, ranches and split-levels under asphalt shingles, many of them now on their second or third roof.

Further north and west, in Mahwah, Ramsey, Franklin Lakes and Saddle River, larger homes from the 1970s on have big, cut-up roofs with long valleys and several chimneys. Along the Palisades in Fort Lee, Cliffside Park and Edgewater, older two-family homes and multi-family buildings add a lot of flat and low-slope roofs. Each of those groups fails in its own way, which is why our town pages go into the detail.

Bergen County weather and your roof

Nor'easters are the storms that matter most here. Towns on the Palisades take wind straight off the Hudson, which lifts ridge caps and drives rain sideways into flashing. The county's mature tree canopy means falling limbs after every big storm and gutters that fill every fall. Winters bring enough snow and freeze-thaw for ice dams on any house with a warm attic, especially the older ones with little ventilation, and summer heat on south-facing slopes finishes the job on aging shingles.

Roofing permits in Bergen County

There is no county roofing permit. Each of Bergen's 70 municipalities runs its own construction office under New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code, so a full roof replacement is permitted and inspected by the town the house is in, and a few towns add historic-preservation review for designated homes. We pull the permit, schedule the inspections and include the fee in your written price; small repairs usually need no permit at all. More in our guide to roof permits in New Jersey.

FAQ

Roofing in Bergen County: common questions

Yes. Each of Bergen's 70 municipalities issues its own construction permit under the state code, and we handle the application, the inspections and the fee for any full replacement. Small repairs usually do not need a permit.
Most of Bergen is within about half an hour of our Englewood shop, and Fort Lee, Englewood Cliffs and Tenafly are 15 minutes or less. Active leaks go to the front of the schedule; for everything else we are usually out within a few business days.
Yes. Pre-war homes across the Northern Valley and near the Hudson still carry original slate and clay tile, and we repair and restore them with matched material and copper flashing. See slate roof repair and tile roofing.
Wind damage after nor'easters, chimney and valley flashing leaks on the older homes, ice dams on under-ventilated attics, and clogged gutters and fallen limbs under the heavy tree cover. On the post-war capes and split-levels, it is usually shingles that have simply reached the end of their life.
Most architectural asphalt replacements in New Jersey run about $9,000–$22,000, and Bergen homes span that whole range: a simple ranch lands near the bottom, a large, steep colonial with several chimneys near the top, and slate or tile runs well above it. Our Bergen town pages give local ranges, and you get a fixed written price after an estimate.
