Check three things before you talk price: that the contractor is registered with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs as a Home Improvement Contractor, that they hand you current liability and workers' comp certificates, and that you get a written contract with the price, the start and finish dates and your three-day right to cancel. Then compare itemized quotes rather than headline numbers, and ask who will actually be on your roof: the company's own crew, or a subcontractor hired that week.

New Jersey does not issue a separate roofing trade license, but contractors doing home improvement work must register with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs as a Home Improvement Contractor, carry general liability insurance, and print their registration number on every contract.
