Your roofing contractor in Essex County, NJ

We are a roofing contractor in Essex County, NJ, working out of our Englewood shop, and Essex holds some of the most varied roofing in the state. Across 22 municipalities you go from dense city blocks in Newark to Victorian Montclair, the estates of Short Hills and the mid-century suburbs west of the Watchung ridge. Most of our work here is roof repair and slate and tile roofing on older homes, flat roofs in Newark, and roof replacement on the post-war houses.

Essex County roofers need to be as comfortable on a 100-year-old slate roof as on a row-house flat roof, often in the same week. Every job gets the same fixed written price, the same daily clean-up and the same 10-year workmanship guarantee, which is the standard we hold ourselves to as a roofing company working across Essex County. For businesses, see commercial roofing in Newark and Montclair.

Essex County homes and the roofs on them

Montclair, Glen Ridge and the Oranges grew as commuter suburbs in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and their Victorians, Tudors and Colonial Revivals still carry a lot of original slate and clay tile, with steep multi-plane roofs, built-in gutters on some older homes and tall masonry chimneys. Llewellyn Park in West Orange, laid out in the 1850s, is among the oldest planned residential communities in the country. Millburn and Short Hills add 1920s and 1930s estates with slate and copper, and Maplewood and South Orange are full of colonials and Tudors from the same era.

Newark is a different world: row houses and two- and three-family frame houses with flat or low-slope roofs in the Ironbound and the North Ward, brick commercial blocks downtown, and single-family neighborhoods like Forest Hill with pitched roofs. West of the ridge, Livingston, Roseland and West Caldwell were built out mostly after World War II, with ranches, split-levels and colonials under asphalt shingles.

Essex County weather and your roof

The First Watchung ridge runs through the county, and the towns along it, from Montclair and Verona to West Orange, catch more wind and a little more snow than Newark does. Mature trees across the suburbs mean falling limbs in storms, leaf-packed gutters and moss on shaded slopes. In Newark, dense blocks of flat roofs take summer heat hard, and nor'easter rain finds every tired seam and parapet flashing.

Roofing permits in Essex County

Each of Essex County's 22 municipalities issues its own construction permit under the state's Uniform Construction Code, and a full replacement needs one. Montclair has several local historic districts and Newark has designated districts too, so work on a designated building can need historic-preservation review before the permit is issued. We handle the application, any review and the inspections, and the fee is part of your written price. See roof permits in New Jersey.

What Essex County homeowners say

Reviews from across Essex County.

The slate work on our 1920s colonial is genuinely beautiful. They sourced reclaimed tiles to match the originals. Worth every penny.

FAQ

Roofing in Essex County: common questions

Yes. Slate and clay tile work on the county's older homes is a large part of what we do in Essex: slipped slates replaced with matched or reclaimed material, valleys and chimneys re-flashed in copper, and full restorations where the roof needs one.
Only if your home is in a designated historic district or is individually designated. Montclair and Newark both have local districts, and there the town may review the materials before issuing the permit. Most homes in the county need only the standard construction permit, which we pull for you.
Montclair and Newark are under half an hour from our Englewood shop, and Livingston and Millburn about 35 minutes. Active leaks go to the front of the schedule, and we give you a straight answer on timing when you call.
Most architectural asphalt replacements in New Jersey run about $9,000–$22,000, and Essex homes span that range and beyond: a Livingston ranch sits toward the low end, a large Montclair Victorian toward the top, and slate or tile runs well above it. Our Essex town pages give local ranges, and you get a fixed written price after an estimate.
